Iain Doran is a consultant in the Real Estate group and specialises in commercial property development.

He has built an arbitration practice on property disputes, especially concerning rent reviews and also practises in the field of Stamp Duty Land Tax, Land and Buildings Transaction Tax, VAT and other property taxes.

Relevant experience

  • City Property (Glasgow) LLP (the investment property vehicle of Glasgow City Council) on the transfer of 2000 investment properties by means of a novel general transfer of the properties not requiring individual conveyances.
  • North Lanarkshire Council in a dispute with a tenant who had an option to purchase on the ability to include "hope value" in the land valuation, leading to a successful result in the Supreme Court.
  • Lloyds Banking Group on the disposal of their large central Edinburgh site for mixed use development.
  • Hargreaves Services plc in relation to saving the Scottish mining industry following its purchase of certain assets of Scottish Coal, which was liquidated in 2013.
  • Along with others, Land Securities and Henderson on the extension of Buchanan Galleries shopping centre, Glasgow (including a novel tax increment financing scheme).
